Work Items — Gantt View

The Gantt view allows you to easily see how work items are mapped out on a timeline. You can also use it to visualize dependency relationships that exist between work items.

Adding Work Items

To add a work item to the Gantt view simply click on one of the two buttons shown below:

Notice the input field that is added to the bottom of the list of work items that have already been created. Enter a name for your work item and press return to create it.

If you want to create a child (i.e., nested) work item, then click on the button shown below:

In this example, Task 3 already has two child work item items: Task 3.1 and Task 3.2.

Scheduling Work Items

An unscheduled work item will have a calendar icon with a minus sign. This means that it doesn't currently have a start date and due date. To schedule it you can move the cursor to a particular date, then click:

Some of your work items may be partially scheduled. That is, they have either a start date or due date, but not both. In this case you will see a blue calendar icon next to the work item. If you click on this icon, then the work item will be scheduled on the day of either the start date or due date (whichever one existed).

Dependencies

To create dependencies simply click on the dot of the predecessor work item, then click on the dot of the successor work item. Dependencies are always created in that order: from predecessor to successor. In the screenshot below Sample Task 2 depends on (is a successor of) Sample Task 1 (its predecessor). The red arrow points to the dot that was first clicked on to establish the dependency relationship:

Child Work Items

If a work item has children (i.e., nested work items), then it will have vertical dashed lines on either side of it, as shown below:

These dashed lines make it easier to visualize the date range within which child work items can span.

If you drag a parent work item to a new date, then the dates of its children will adjust by the same amount. For example, if we drag Task 3 so its start date is adjusted by 1 day, then the start (and end) dates of Task 3.1 and Task 3.2 will also be adjusted by 1 day.

Table Columns

You can modify the table columns that are displayed on the Gantt chart. In the screenshot below you can see that we have added columns for Assignee, Phase, and Priority. The red arrow shows the button you can click on to modify the table columns.

You can also resize the columns by hovering over the vertical lines separating the columns, then dragging.
